Prepare a factual explanation

Choose a short, accurate account of the break or transition that you are comfortable sharing. Distinguish a role ending from a change you chose. You can protect personal details while explaining the timeline truthfully.

A layoff, a caregiving break and a move into another field are different situations. Prepare wording that fits yours instead of adopting a sample answer with facts that do not apply.

Move into relevant experience

After explaining the context, discuss what makes you interested in the target work and which experiences support that interest. Choose an example of a task, decision or result that connects to a requirement in the posting.

If you studied, volunteered or completed a project during the break, identify it accurately. Do not imply continuous employment or professional responsibility that you did not hold.

  • What is the factual timeline?
  • Which previous experience is relevant to this role?
  • What have I done to understand the new work?
  • Which skills transfer, and where would I need support?

Explain a change of direction

Name the work you want to do and describe what has informed that choice. A convincing transition explanation needs more than saying you are passionate: a relevant project, training experience or conversation can help, if it actually happened.

Practise a follow-up about the experience you lack. Acknowledge it and explain how you would learn, rather than stretching an unrelated story to imply expertise.

Check the explanation with a new question

Try answering both “Why this role?” and “What have you been doing recently?” The facts should stay consistent while the emphasis changes. Ask for feedback on clarity and relevance.

Use the feedback to improve the explanation. Practice cannot remove every concern an employer may have or guarantee a hiring result.
